The European mobile gaming market has performed   similarly to the US market last month. Super Mario Run was not only at the top of the download rankings, but only fifth in sales. Pokémon GO’s position remained at seventh, while the Big Three, Supercell and Machine Zone dominated the rest.

In December 2016, Super Mario Run broke through the market and proved itself to be a success in Europe and the US in terms of downloads. However, it could not get the top of sales charts, as Supercell’s Clash Royale remained at number one on both the European and American charts. Looking at other applications, Netflix is the most money-grabbing application in the West, while Tencent’s QQ is China’s own.

US: Super Mario Run attacked the sales rankings

The biggest story in the US mobile game market in December 2016 is the paradox of Super Mario Run’s download and revenue. Although the game had the highest downloads in the region last month, it only came in seventh in terms of revenue. Even with the Nintendo brand advantage, exclusive access to Apple’s capabilities, and the lucrative promotion package, Super Mario Run still can not bypass its fee-for-charge format and rank behind the product. Of Supercell, King and Machine Zone.

Meanwhile, Pokémon GO, a product was developed by Nianic and heavily attracted by Nintendo’s IP, remains No. 6 on Super Mario Run despite some months of releasing and heating loss. The decision to add 2nd generation Pokémon and two live events during Christmas have helped Pokémon GO rising two places on the sales chart and showing the value of the free form.

On the non-gaming applications rankings, the top 10 apps with the highest revenue retained their positions from November to December. Netflix, Pandora, and HBO   showed the value of paid monthly services specializing in video and music. It is more interesting with  the download rankings, when Facebook was downgraded by competition from Instagram and Snapchat.

Europe: A social Christmas

The European mobile gaming market has performed very similarly to the US market last month. Super Mario Run was at the top of the download rankings, but only fifth in sales. Pokémon GO’s position remained at seventh, while the Big Three, Supercell and Machine Zone dominated the rest.

In the field of European applications, dating applications have declined significantly in the past month. Although Tinder still holds the second place in the sales rankings, other similar apps have plummeted. In contrast, social applications like Skype, WhatsApp, Snapchat and Viber all have the promotion and entered the top 20 highest revenue. This suggests that European users prefer to spend money on connecting with a network of friends and family already, rather than building a new relationship through a dating app.

China:Does NetEase have advantage?

The iOS game sales rankings in China in December of 2016 are a bit shabby, and at first glance, Tencent won the NetEase rivalry. Owners of Supercell, Tencent hold more positions in both the download rankings and revenue streams over the month than NetEase, but NetEase itself is the one with more revenue. Looking at the top 5 for the top of the sales rankings, NetEase holds up to 4 and shows that they are better at charging customers than rivals.

In other application markets, Chinese users show similar tastes with Europe and America. The top three names belong to QQ – messaging applications, 视频 视频 – streaming video services, and FaceU 萌 萌 – Snapchat style apps.
