Rocket League Dev Teases Basketball Mode

Rocket League is set to be updated with a new mode that switches out goalposts for basketball hoops, according to a teaser image from developer Psyonix.

Writing on the studio’s official Twitter page, Psyonix asked its followers “who wants a teaser for something we’re releasing later this year?” Later it revealed a picture of a Rocket League court with a giant neon basketball hoop and backboard at the goal-end. It also showed the three-point line on the court, suggesting that players can get bonus points for scoring at distance.

March Madness is just around the corner. Great time to tease the mode we’re working on next #RocketLeagueHoops

A basketball mode would fundamentally change how Rocket League plays. The critically acclaimed indie title is famous for its soccer-but-with-cars conceit, tasking players to score goals by throttling their vehicles against a giant ball. Going by the image, a basketball mode would require players to flight the ball in order to score. Since airborne ball control is one of the trickiest skills to master in Rocket League, such a mode may have been designed with core fans in mind.

As of February 26, Rocket League had reached 12 million players and 4 million copies sold across Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Developed on a budget of only $2 million and with little marketing push, the game has now generated more than $70 million in revenue. In addition to revenue from game sales (Rocket League sells for $20), Psyonix makes money from Rocket League’s $4 expansion packs such as Supersonic Fury, Chaos Run, and Revenge of the Battle Cars.

Additionally, Psyonix offers the Back to the Future pack for $2, while a Batman v Superman car pack is also available for the same price. Beyond that, Psyonix is talking with Universal pictures about bringing Knight Rider‘s KITT car to Rocket League.

Rocket League will expand its footprint further still, as Psyonix will release a physical version of the game at retail in the future.
